O povoamento da ilha do Porto Santo, iniciado por volta de 1420, foi dificultado por diversos fatores, entre eles os vários períodos de seca prolongada a que esta ilha esteve sujeita. Ainda na atualidade existem marcas da busca incansável pelo recurso indispensável à sobrevivência, nos inúmeros poços e furos existentes por toda a ilha. Os fontanários do Porto Santo são o testemunho vivo da cultura porto-santense, pontos de encontro entre os seus habitantes onde se partilhavam histórias, cantigas e vivências da ilha.

Este fontanário faz referência a João Teodorico Câmara, fundador de um dos primeiros restaurantes da ilha do Porto Santo, aberto em 1964.

Esta construção remonta à segunda metade do século XX, e é constituída por blocos de cantaria vermelha, no centro, e cantaria branca do Porto Santo nas bordas. A pia é de feição semicircular e o piso apresenta dois níveis de pavimento, um em calçada madeirense (calhau rolado e outro em pedra semi-talhada de pequenas proporções.

The settlement of the island of Porto Santo, which began around 1420, was hampered by several factors, including recurrent periods of prolonged drought to which the island was prone. Even today, traces of the ceaseless quest for this resource, vital for survival, can be seen in the countless wells and boreholes all over the island. Porto Santo’s public drinking fountains are living proof of that Porto Santo culture. They were where people swapped stories, songs and the latest island gossip. The name of this drinking fountain is a reference to João Teodorico Câmara, who began one of the first Porto Santo restaurants which opened in 1964.

Built in the latter half of the 20th century, this fountain is made of red stone blocks in the center, surrounded by Porto Santo’s white stone. The bowl of the fountain is semicircular and the floor has two levels of paving, one of Madeira-style round pebble-stones, and the other of small, rough hewn stones.
